Synopsis
Some people just can't handle growing up.
A young, hipster entrepreneur crashes and burns on the eve of his company’s big launch. With his entire life in disarray, he leaves Manhattan to move in with his estranged pregnant sister, brother-in-law and three year-old nephew in the suburbs — only to become their manny. Faced with real responsibility, he may finally have to grow up — but not without some bad behavior first.

So wholesome, like less cynical and more hopeful The Skeleton Twins.
Rose Byrne is a lucky, lucky lady 😤🥺

Another very solid little indie from the Duplass brothers. Say what you like about Nick Kroll but he's brilliant here, playing off of the always excellent Rose Byrne with ease to create a wonderfully natural and sweet comedy, punctuated with just the right amount of serious bits. A better final act away from a higher score.

It's a comedy!
Yeah, but it isn't funny.
It's a drama!
Yeah, but it isn't dramatic.
So what is it?!
Bad. Really bad.
Which is a shame, because talent it does not lack. Nick Kroll, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Joel McHale, Josh Charles, Jane Krakowski, Paula Garces. All people who, when working with the right material, are capable of either putting a smile on my face or making me feel something, anything at all. I felt nothing during Adult Beginners. Nothing. Well, I guess that isn't true. I felt numb, dumb and bored.
Jake (Nick Kroll) is a young hot shot entrepreneur on the verge of a massive financial windfall when his company crashes and burns the night before it…

Why is Joel McHale on the poster? He’s in this movie for probably less than 30 seconds. That being said it’s pretty good. Story moves along. You get a likable toned down Nick Kroll. Family drama plus comedy with a happy ending. I think it works pretty well.

Follows the exact same indie-core formula a lot of comedians dip their feet into when trying to become drama actors. It was a cute story and easy watch, just not very funny or impactful. Nick Kroll can NOT hold an emotional scene; I don't know why they thought he could.

For some reason I've been seeing a lot of bum reviews for this film. I really don't know why. It's not that I think that Adult Beginners is brilliant, but I definitely felt a connection.
Maybe I have a soft spot for characters that are vulnerable, but I found this to be a gem that kept on giving. It wasn't laugh out loud funny, but a laughed throughout. It wasn't crazy dramatic, but I was engaged start to finish.
This type of story has been told similarly sure, what story hasn't? These types of stories do grip me because it captures the casualness of life for the average mid-twenty to mid-thirty year old, whilst blending it with the overwhelming seriousness…

An estranged brother and sister reunite in their old family home, both realising their lives have not turned out as they had expected. Sound familiar? That's because 'The Skeleton Twins' probably did it better.
Although I'm not a big fan of Comedy Central sketch shows, I will admit to finding Nick Kroll funny some of the time, and Rose Byrne is always quite lovely. It's kind of difficult to believe them as brother and sister, but they have enough chemistry to pull it off. I do wonder if Rose Byrne is getting sick and tired of always playing the straight character.
This film lacks the subtlely and drama of 'The Skeleton Twins', which was really about something while making it…
