Sean Penn criticizes the Oscars for limiting cultural expressions at Marrakech Film Festival

Sean Penn expressed his criticism of the Academy Awards while attending the Marrakech Film Festival on Tuesday. The two-time Oscar winner, 64, used the occasion to voice disdain for the Oscars' role in "limiting different cultural expressions," calling the ceremony a "television show first" rather than an indicator of artistic merit.

"Academy have exercised really extraordinary cowardice when it comes to being part of the bigger world of expression," Penn said. "They have largely been part of limiting the imagination and very limiting of different cultural expressions."

Where the nickname Oscars came from for the Academy Awards

The nickname "Oscar" for the Academy Award statuette has been around almost as long as the award itself, though its exact origin remains unclear. The official name for the trophy is the Academy Award of Merit, and it was designed by Cedric Gibbons, MGM's art director, featuring a knight holding a sword in front of a film reel.

One popular theory suggests that the name "Oscar" came from Margaret Herrick, the Academy librarian in the 1930s, who thought the statuette resembled her Uncle Oscar. The Academy staff began using the nickname, and it eventually caught on.

Another theory, favored by film historian Foster Hirsch, credits Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky, who referred to the award as "Oscar" in 1934 while writing about Katharine Hepburn's first win.

Although there's a less plausible theory that actress Bette Davis coined the term in 1936, most historians agree that the true origin is a mystery. Regardless of its beginnings, the nickname Oscar became widely accepted and is now synonymous with Hollywood's most prestigious awards.

Who is the Oscar statuette modeled after?

Wicked shortlisted in four Oscars 2025 categories (7)

The famous golden Oscar statuette was modeled after Mexican actor Emilio Fernández Romo.

He was working in Hollywood, appearing in many Westerns, when he met the wife of Cedric Gibbons - a Hollywood art director who designed the Oscar statuette in 1928 although the actual sculpting was tasked to George Stanley, a Los Angeles artist.

Gibbons reportedly asked Fernandez to pose naked for his sketch that created the basis for the trophy.

India selects 'Laapataa Ladies' over 'All We Imagine as Light' for Oscar submission

India's submission for the 2025 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film has sparked controversy. Despite the critical acclaim of All We Imagine as Light, which garnered two Golden Globe nominations for Best Director (Payal Kapadia) and Best Foreign Language Film, India's Film Federation (FFI) opted to submit Laapataa Ladies for Oscar consideration.

All We Imagine as Light, which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of two Malayali nurses navigating loneliness in Mumbai. FFI president Ravi Kottarakara defended the decision, explaining that All We Imagine as Light was perceived as too "European" in tone, while Laapataa Ladies, a more traditional Hindu-language film, aligned better with the jury's preferences.

The unexpected choice has left many questioning the criteria for selecting films for international recognition.

11:32 AM EST

Films that won an Academy Award that have also been on the Oscars shortlist

Several films that made it onto the Oscars shortlist have gone on to win major awards.

Notably, Parasite made history as the first non-English language film to win Best Picture, breaking a 91-year trend.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) swept all its nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and Original Score. Classic films like It Happened One Night (1934), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), and The Silence of the Lambs (1991) each took home the "Big Five" Oscars—Best Picture, Director, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, and Screenplay. Other Oscar-winning films include Ben-Hur (1959), Titanic (1997), West Side Story (1961), Moulin Rouge (1953), and Up (1985).

Selena Gomez responds to Eugenio Derbez's criticism of her performance in *Emilia Pérez*

Selena Gomez addressed the criticism made by Eugenio Derbez regarding her performance in the film Emilia Pérez last week. During an appearance on the podcast Hablando de Cine, Derbez criticized Gomez's use of Spanish, which he argued was "indefensible," given that Spanish is not her first language. He mentioned that he and others were taken aback by her performance, claiming that her lack of fluency hindered the nuance of her portrayal.

While Derbez acknowledged the film's merits, he questioned the decision of French director Jacques Audiard to helm a story set in Mexico without a deep understanding of the culture. Despite the criticism, Gomez responded directly to Derbez on social media, expressing regret if her performance didn't meet expectations but emphasizing the effort and heart she put into the role.

"I understand where you are coming from. I'm sorry I did the best I could with the time I was given," Gomez wrote. "Doesn't take away from how much work and heart I put into this movie."

In another post on TikTok, Derbez issued an apology for his "careless comments," acknowledging that his remarks were hurtful and not aligned with the support that Latinos should show for one another. He expressed admiration for Gomez and reiterated his respect for her career.

"Emilia Pérez deserves to be celebrated, not diminished by my thoughtless remarks," he wrote in part.

What to know about the Oscar statuette

Wicked shortlisted in four Oscars 2025 categories (11)

The Oscar statuette, one of the most recognized trophies in the world, has graced the mantels of filmmaking's greatest since its creation in 1929. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, formed in 1927, sought a way to honor outstanding achievements in film. At a pivotal dinner, members discussed how to encourage excellence in motion picture production, leading to the creation of the Oscar. MGM art director Cedric Gibbons designed the statuette, which depicts a knight standing on a film reel holding a crusader's sword, while sculptor George Stanley brought it to life, according to the Oscars website.

The statuette stands 13½ inches tall, weighs 8½ pounds, and features five spokes on its film reel, symbolizing the Academy's five original branches: actors, directors, producers, technicians, and writers. The design has remained largely unchanged, with only the size of the base evolving until it was standardized in 1945. While officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is affectionately known as Oscar, a nickname popularized by Academy librarian Margaret Herrick and adopted by the Academy in 1939.

The Oscar statuettes are made of solid bronze and plated with 24-karat gold, though during World War II, a shortage led to temporary plaster versions. Winners were later able to exchange these for the gold-plated models. The statuette continues to symbolize excellence, with the Academy hosting the prestigious ceremony each year to honor achievements across 25 categories, making it an enduring emblem of cinematic accomplishment.

Brian Cox slams Oscars as 'nonsense'

Veteran actor Brian Cox has criticized the Oscars, calling the awards system "nonsense" while recalling his experience playing Winston Churchill in the same year Gary Oldman won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the British leader. Despite Cox's acclaimed career, including his role as Logan Roy in Succession, he has never received an Academy Award nomination.

Cox, known for his diverse roles in Succession, The Escapist, and Nuremberg, voiced frustration over the Oscars' focus on films released during the "Oscar season" between Thanksgiving and Christmas. In 2017, Cox starred as Churchill in the independent film Churchill, released in the summer. Meanwhile, Oldman's portrayal in Darkest Hour received significant attention, earning him the Oscar.

Cox spoke candidly to The Hollywood Reporter, arguing that the Oscars often overlook quality performances outside this narrow window, labeling the awards system a "fallacy." He expressed belief that his performance was superior but went unnoticed due to the timing and lack of studio backing.

He said: "Our film came out in the summer, and it was a relatively independent film, so you haven't got the power of the studios behind it. The Oscars are absolute nonsense because everything that's judged in the Oscars, it's not a year's work. It's just the work that comes out between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I think it makes those awards a fallacy quite honestly because there's a lot of other good work that goes on outside of what they call Oscar season. So my film never even got a look, and I still think my performance is a better performance."

Oscar shortlists offer crucial insight into awards season contenders

Wicked shortlisted in four Oscars 2025 categories (12)

The Oscar shortlists, which are announced in 10 major categories, offer a glimpse into which films are resonating with voters and which campaigns might lose momentum.

For studios and strategists, these shortlists act as a critical milestone as the industry prepares for potential surprises and snubs.

In the previous year, Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig, topped the shortlists with five nominations, including in sound, original score, and three songs. However, its absence from the makeup and hairstyling category—where it had seemed a likely contender—suggested some vulnerabilities.

Despite this, the film secured eight Oscar nominations and won for the original song What Was I Made For? by Billie Eilish and Finneas.
